Meet Your Hosts
LAUREN MELNICK

I’m Lauren. I’m a South Africa travel blogger, freelance writer, and course creator. Over the last four years, I’ve travelled to over 30 countries and ticked off almost everything on my South African bucket list.
I’ve worked with numerous brands on campaigns like Cape Union Mart, K-Way, SA Tourism, and Ford South Africa.
Over the years, I’ve conquered the Otter Trail, Cape Point, Tugela Falls, Mnweni, Wolfberg Arch, Mount Batur in Bali, and a 3-day trek through Sapa, Vietnam.
I’m excited to meet you and be a part of your experience hiking Mnweni!
PATRICK RICHARDSON
My name is Patrick and I am a qualified mountain guide who specializes in hiking and mountaineering in South Africa and internationally.
I have a burning passion for all things outdoors.
I’m a highly experienced mountaineer and have climbed mountains all over the world including Denali, The Matterhorn, and Mont Blanc.
Other than my international summits, I have logged nearly 400 nights in the Drakensberg over the span of 5 years, having summited most peaks multiple times and completing over 80 passes.
For me, hiking brings oneself to the core of survival, leaving behind all privileges that we have been given in this age, and pushing ourselves into a wild environment to experience Mother Nature and all her elements.

Mnweni 3-Day Hike Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive at Mnweni Cultural Centre in Bergville at 10 am.
We will hike 18 to 23 km depending if the shuttle to the trailhead is operating.
Our altitude gain will be 1,825m asl 625m.
We will camp at Chi-Chi or another nearby campsite.
Day 2
Watch the sunrise and eat breakfast.
Pack up camp between 7:00 – 7:30.
We will hike 6 km up Mnweni Pass which has multiple inclines that will test you mentally and physically.
Once we reach the top, we will spend the night camping inside Ledge’s Cave or another nearby site.

Day 3
Wake up at sunrise and have breakfast.
We will hike 15-20km (depending on the shuttle operating) and descend down Rockeries Pass.
Once at the bottom, we can cool off in rock pools before making the final stretch to the Mnweni Cultural Center.
Day 4
Although the hike officially ends on Day 3, we will probably finish the hike in the late afternoon.
I’d recommend spending an extra night at Mnweni Cultural Centre to recover before heading back home.
You can camp here or book a night in one of the chalets. Bookings for accommodation are arranged in person.
